# HE 0435-1223

HE 0435-1223 is a quasar in the constellation [Eridanus](https://spacecatalog.org/constellation/eridanus), 40.90 Gly from Earth. It was discovered in 2002.

One quasar in four images around a foreground [galaxy](https://spacecatalog.org/galaxies). Because the four paths have different lengths, the same flicker arrives at different times, and the delays between them measure the expansion rate of the universe without any reference to a distance ladder.

## At a glance

- **WHAT IT IS:** Quasar
- **HOW FAR:** 40.90 Gly — A luminosity distance, from its redshift — how faint it looks. The light itself left 9.60 billion years ago.
- **WHERE TO LOOK:** [Eridanus](https://spacecatalog.org/constellation/eridanus) — The patch of sky it sits in, as seen from Earth.

## Properties

| Quantity | Value |
| --- | --- |

| CONSTELLATION | Eridanus |
| RIGHT ASCENSION (J2000) | 04h 38m 14.9s |
| DECLINATION (J2000) | −12° 17′ 14.6″ |

## Catalogue data

### WHAT KIND OF THING IT IS

What the object is in itself, rather than how it happens to look from here.

| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Accretion state | quasar — a thin disc near its Eddington limit |

### WHERE IT IS AND HOW IT MOVES

Position, motion across the sky and the size it covers on it. These are measurements of the object as seen from here, so every one of them depends on where here is.

| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Redshift (z) | 1.69606 |
