SpaceCatalog is a personal, non-commercial project operated by a private individual. It is not a business. Nothing on it is sold, there is no advertising and no sponsorship, the catalogue and its API are free to use, and no payment is taken anywhere. There is accordingly no company, no VAT identification number, no commercial register entry, no regulated professional activity and no supervisory authority within the meaning of § 5 (1) nos. 3–6 DDG.

Email is the way to reach me and I read everything — corrections to a record, a source that should be here, or anything on this page. There is no telephone number: § 5 (1) no. 2 DDG requires a means of rapid electronic contact and direct communication, which a monitored email address satisfies.

The site is published under the name Slavik, which is the short form of the legal name above. Both refer to the same person.

I am neither obliged nor willing to participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board (Verbraucherschlichtungsstelle).

No link to the European Online Dispute Resolution platform is given here: that platform ceased operations on 20 July 2025 and the underlying obligation no longer applies. Templates that still reference it are out of date.

Under § 7 (1) DDG I am responsible for my own content on these pages according to general law. Under §§ 8 to 10 DDG I am not obliged to monitor transmitted or stored third-party information, or to investigate circumstances that indicate unlawful activity. Obligations to remove or block the use of information under general law remain unaffected; liability in that respect begins only from the point at which a concrete infringement becomes known. Should I become aware of any such infringement, I will remove the content promptly.

One thing this site does needs saying plainly, because it is the whole of what it is: nothing here is measured by us. Every number is downloaded from a published astronomical catalogue, every headline from the observatory that wrote it, and every photograph from the person who took it. Those upstreams are named, with the release and the licence each figure came from, on the about page and in the source field of every API record. Errors in an upstream propagate here, and a figure is reproduced as published rather than corrected silently. This site is not an authority on any object in it and must not be cited as one: for anything that matters, cite the catalogue behind the record. If you find something wrong, write to slavik@nospam-slavikdev.com — that is faster than any formal route and it is the one I act on.

This site links to external websites — source catalogues, observatory releases, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons among them — over whose content I have no control. I cannot accept liability for that third-party content; the respective provider or operator of those pages is always responsible for it. Linked pages were checked for possible legal violations at the time of linking, and no unlawful content was apparent. Permanent monitoring of linked pages is not reasonable without concrete evidence of an infringement. Should I become aware of any such infringement, I will remove the link promptly.

Four different things on this site are under four different licences, and running them together would be the easiest way to get the attribution wrong.

• The catalogue data is CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-SA 4.0 depending on the upstream it came from, named per record in the source field and listed in full on the about page. Attribution is a licence condition rather than a courtesy, and a link to the object page is the way to give it.
• The software behind the site is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. It is separate from the catalogue data, which carries the terms of the upstream each record came from.
• The photographs are not mine. Each one is reproduced under its own licence, with its author named on the object’s page and every one of them listed together under image credits. Reuse follows that licence and not this page.

What is left — the written prose on these pages, the design, the wordmark and the site’s own text — is subject to German copyright law. Reproduction, adaptation, distribution and exploitation beyond the limits of copyright require my written consent. Downloads and copies of this page are permitted for private, non-commercial use. If you believe something here infringes a copyright, please tell me and I will remove it promptly.
