] GALAXYSombrero Galaxy is a spiral galaxy Sa in the constellation Virgo, 29.50 from Earth, shining at apparent magnitude 8.59 (). It is catalogued as 2MASX J12395949-1137230, HD 110124 and IRAS 12373-1120, among 12 designations in total. It was discovered in 1781.
Seen nearly edge-on, a brilliant bulge cut by a knife-sharp dust lane. The shape earned it a hat's name and one of astronomy's most reproduced photographs.

Sombrero Galaxy is not a point of light, so the limit above is the wrong one to hold it against: the same brightness spread over 8.4′ of sky is harder than a star of it, and goes first — spread out, it comes to 22.3 . Catalogued sizes are measured to a photographic contour, and the part an eye sees is usually smaller.
