What the spectral type means

O, B, A, F, G, K, M runs hottest to coolest. The Sun is a G2V — a G-type star, temperature step 2, on the main sequence. The Roman numeral is the luminosity class.

Why magnitudes run backwards

The scale is inherited from antiquity: brighter means lower. Sirius sits at −1.4, the faintest naked-eye stars at about +6, and each step of 5 is a factor of 100 in brightness.
