88 REGIONS · 196 564 OBJECTSThe sky is divided into 88 regions with exact boundaries, agreed in 1922. Every object with a known position falls inside exactly one of them. They are grouped here by the month each one is highest at nine in the evening — a date set by where the Sun is, so it is the same month everywhere on Earth. That is why these are months and not seasons: Orion belongs to January whether January is the coldest part of your year or the hottest.
Equatorial regions rise from both hemispheres. The northern and southern ones are centred more than 30° from the celestial equator, and sit low or never rise at all from the far side of the world.
