Exoplanets

6336 CONFIRMED

Planets around other stars. None were confirmed before 1992; the catalogue now runs to thousands.

PRIMER — 60 SECONDS

How they are found

Mostly indirectly: a planet crossing its star dims it by a fraction of a percent, or tugs it into a wobble measurable in the star's spectrum. Only a handful have been imaged directly.

The habitable zone

The orbital band where liquid water could exist on a surface. It says nothing about whether a planet has water, an atmosphere, or a surface at all.
